■Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station(道の駅「美濃白川」)

Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station is located in Gifu Prefecture, the center of Japan, at the entrance to Hida Road (national highway 41), which runs from north to south through Gifu. It takes about 2 hours from Chubu Centrair International Airport by car on the highway to Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station, 40 minutes from Mino Shirakawa to the famous Gero hot springs, and 100 minutes to the ancient Japanese city of Hida Takayama. Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station is located at the entrance to the Dragon Route designated by the Japan Tourism Agency, one of the extensive sightseeing routes in Japan. It is a rest area located between Mino Road and Hida Road; the facility has been visited by many overseas tourists since its opening. Weeping cherry blossoms in Midono (Spring) (水戸野しだれ桜)

This 400-year old weeping cherry tree is in the Midono area of Shirakawa-cho.
The tree is illuminated from the end of March to the beginning of April every year, and the weeping cherry blossoms festival is organized during this period.
At night, you can enjoy a fascinating view of the weeping cherry blossoms reflected on the surface of a rice field.

Tea picking (Spring) (茶摘み)

The season for picking tea comes in May after the season of cherry blossoms.
Tea picking starts all together in Shirakawa-cho, the origin of Shirakawa tea.
You can refresh yourself on a tea plantation in the mountains.

Ayu (sweetfish) fishing (Summer)(鮎釣り)

Fishing for ayu (sweetfish) with live bait is popular in Shirakawa-cho.
With this fishing method, an angler hooks the ayu when it attacks the live bait as an enemy invading their territory. Fishing for ayu with this fishing method is very difficult but popular among anglers.
The season for ayu fishing is between June and August. Please visit the website of the Hidagawa Fishermen’s Association to check the start of the season.

Taishogawara Camping Site (Summer)(大正河原キャンプ場-道の駅 清流白川 クオーレの里-)

 

Cottages and a camping site are at Seiryu Shirakawa Cuore no Sato Roadside Station, about 15-minute drive from Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station.
Next to Cuore no Sato is the Taishogawara camping site, where you can swim in the river, barbeque, and camp in summer.

Autumn Leaves at Samigawakyo (Autumn)(佐見川峡の紅葉)

You can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves at the small canyon called Samigawakyo on the Sami River along National Highway 256.
The best season is from the beginning to the middle of November every year. (Shirakawa-cho Tourist Association)

Snow Scene around Shirakawa Bridge (Winter)(白川橋の冬景色)

Shirakawa Bridge, located near Shirakawaguchi Station on the JR Takayama Line, is an iron suspension bridge constructed in the Taisho period.
In winter when it snows, the combination of the Hida River, surrounding mountains, and snow piled up on the bridge make a fantastic scene, which makes this place a popular tourist spot.

Kurokawa Azuma-za (Entertainment)(黒川東座)

In the Edo period, the people in this area adored real kabuki actors and learned kabuki from actors in the kabuki troop, and eventually they enjoyed performing kabuki themselves.
Thus, kabuki performed by amateur actors established its roots in this area, which is called “local kabuki” in Gifu. Although there are about 200 similar local kabuki preservation societies in Japan, as many as 30 societies, the highest number in Japan, are located in Gifu.
Kurokawa Azuma-za, a kabuki preservation society, is located in Shirakawa-cho, and the society performs kabuki on the third Sunday in May of every year.

◎Shirakawa tea

Shirakawa-cho is famous for Shirakawa tea.

The temperature difference is large in this area, which is good for growing tea. Shirakawa tea is famous for its mild, smooth taste.

 

A tea plant is in the facilities of Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station. We process tea leaves and sell Japanese tea and other foods containing tea leaves, such as soft-serve ice cream and cookies.

 

You can try Shirakawa tea in the souvenir area for free of charge. Please come and have a taste.

We make ham and sausages by processing local Gifu pork provided by local pig farmers in Gifu at our plant in the facilities. We provide various popular products, such as our staple pressed ham, as well as wild sesame flavored sausages,roasted green tea flavored and Japanese mushroom vienna sausages.

You can also buy Hida beef, a famous product in Gifu.

Hida beef is one of the best branded Japanese black beef. Beef cattle are kept and raised in Hida Province in Gifu. Hida beef is popular not only in Japan but also among people overseas.

 

◎Fresh local vegetables

We have various fresh vegetables produced by farmers in Shirakawa-cho.

All vegetables are harvested the same day. They are fresh and delicious for your purchase.

 

◎Taste of home cooking

Another popular product at Mino Shirakawa Roadside Station is the box lunch and delicatessen cooked by moms in Shicakawa-cho.

Particularly, Hoba Zushi, sushi wrapped in a hoba leaf, is a popular local food loved by people for many years.
